Group reflection

Group Reflection

Yes we were working together well.

Some of the ideas my partners had where different views, but that allowed me to see steins critical writing from a different perspective which helps me a lot. It allowed me to get my thinking process going.

Intro:

The into was good and straight forward there ideas of how it was broke down were the same as mine. I liked how they gave examples and it worked to give the ethos.

Control:

I was intrigued by what quotes where brought up in this one pager but after reviewing them I found them to be clear and concise. I also like how they incorporated pictures to give you a better understanding of what they believed the control of steins essay was.

Controlling purpose

Stiens used quote and writer choices to break down The 19854 Macintosh ad  to develop her readers concept of the ad and how it was developed

Assignment 11

Assignment 11

Was there a secondary purpose?

Yes I believe there was a secondary purpose, Steins main purpose could have been how apple concord IBM but her second purpose could have been women rights because she talks about how apple uses a woman carrying a hammer to break through IBM which in fact was all men seating In the seats.

What does the writer assume he audience knows or believes?

Stein defiantly wrote this towards an audience that is of a higher education because the factit is an academic text and the words she uses to describe some the happening in the essay are beyond everyday people. Also the way that she writes it would bore the average readers so she was expecting the reader to be interesting in the little details not overall essay.

Do the emotional appeals seem reasonable to you?

Well in some cases stian does go over board and tends to lose her readers because she goes so in-depth that she beats a subject to death as you can say. But other moments the author uses a good amount which allows the reader to connect with what stein wants to get through to the audience.

Design example

This could be an example of the design that an author uses to attract the attention of his or her readers. In the pictures they show some the biggest competitors in today’s snowboarding. They also have a picture of the red bull which could attract some more audience. The fact that the red bull emblem is in brighter colors then the rest of the paper could writers choice to attract the reader to that certain part of the paper and make them read on.

Assignment 10

Summary of 1984 Macintosh Ad

Stein created an in depth situation of what is going on in 1984 and how humans are in a drought for new technology and then Macintosh comes along. Stein breaks it down in certain section and asks why Apple would use this for their commercial and does it relate. She also relates to real world experiences as in the communist and president Ronald Reagan.

This advertisement was innovative in many different ways it emphasizes women rights as well as apple breaking through the almighty barrier of the company IBM. Which was a task that was never been done before and people where amazed by how they took over the market being such a small company. This also made a really good story of how they evolved. The company was much underestimated which allowed them to be innovative and NEW.

Stein was broke every little part of the essay down and argued every little bit of the commercial into very critical interpretation of the text.

Sedaris controlling purpose

Sedaris wanted to educate people that have no idea of what taxidermy is and to give them example through quotes and examples.

Assignment 9

Assignment 9

Throughout my writing I believe that my audience can vary greatly. I tend to be a bias person so I’m with something or I am against something. So there for my audience could be whoever agrees with the argument or situation that I am writing about. Or they could also be someone that is interested in the subject and would like to learn more about what I am writing about.

I writing my ideas with the writer that wrote the book I am writing about. I put my views against there’s and sometimes the coexist and other times they tend to clash and allows for a good argument between me and my views of the authors work.

When I make a relationship with my audience I want them to be interested and not bored to what I have to say or my thoughts and ideas. I would like them to understand what I am writing clearly. Ethical dimension of communication could be how far you take your audience and how you communicate with them. You have to communicate with them on a personal level but also be professional in away.

I am going to use this to create my interpretive essay and communicate with my audience and keep them interested but also to keep them thinking and on their toes.

Assignment 5 Cameron Bazan

Assignment 5

I believe that Susan Orlean composed this article to create awareness of what taxidermy actually is and to shed light to the stereo typical thoughts of taxidermy.

Orlean would have hoped her readers would feel like taxidermy is a natural art not mean and cruel like some believe, and that the taxidermist themselves would not be looked at as weird and cruel as well. You can see this in some of the quotes for example “I love deer one of the champions in the whitetail division said to me there my babies”. This quote is very controversial but I believe that Orlean was leaning towards the side the taxidermist respect for the animals.

While I was reading Life Like I felt like it was an interesting paper kind of had me puzzled in some part. I personally knew what taxidermy is and I do not find it weird at all I find normal and respectful for the animals. I think Orlean wanted me to feel like that, she wanted me to find out new stuff on taxidermy and to show different perspective on how people are only trying to respect the animals.

Assignment 2 Cameron Bazan

What I expect from this class is to learn new and innovative methods that well develop my writing skills and interpreting text skills. I also would like to improve my voice in my writing and I’m hoping this class well develops the skills I need for that. I think that English 101 will allow me to develop m self to a college level writer where I can get my point across to others.

Assignment 8 Cameron Bazan

Assignment 8

I found some things very interesting in my peers writing; One of my peers  brought up something about subtle persuasions on Orleans part. It makes sense because Orlean does not just shove her purpose in your face she allows you to go either way with or against taxidermy. I think the writer where able because he looked past the subject of taxidermy and looked how it was formatted and seen that there wasn’t really a full fledge purpose statement.

I found my writing different because I focused more on the Quotes and where they were paced in Orleans article. The next time I write an essay I am going to proceed with the steps I take and look at the subject itself and then i would like to look at the format and see why the writer choose to write like this.

The audience for my essay is defiantly one that’s NOT against taxidermy. I have no problem with taxidermy and it shows in my essay. I would also like to expand my audience by making my essay less one sided which would allow me create a better overall essay. My tone is intrigued because I was interested in the facts that Orlean brought up in her Article. I believe my essay is set apart because I focused on why Orlean choose her quotes and where they are placed in her article; also how do they go along with her purpose and does it help or hurt purpose statement.

Assignment 7 Cameron Bazan

Assignment 7

Why does Orlean use quotes from the taxidermist that are not clear and concise?

Why does she bring up the specific example that makes taxidermy look negative if she is amazed by it?

In the story life like orlean uses quotes that make the reader rethink whether they know what her purpose for writing the essay or not. For example “I love deer one of the champions in the whitetail division said to me there my babies”. So there is two ways there are two ways you can interpret this; this champion is crazy and obsessed with deer, or that she has great respect for the deer and admires them. The first way would make you look at taxidermy in a weird way showing that the taxidermist themselves are weird and messed up. But on the other hand it could show that the taxidermist is normal people that are just enjoying their job or hobby. Why Orlean did this makes me wonder because after reading all the text makes you think she enjoys the art form of taxidermy. So why would she go and ruin her purpose by putting in a controversial quote like that.

Another that is hazy is when someone ask for a fetal cow. Some people could find this very weird and offensive. Many people believe that a animal should be buried after death just as a human should be. But Olrean would have brought this to everyone attention to show people what a fetal cow would look like; without having taxidermy nobody would now what a  fetal cow would look like this is also a very good scientific tool it always scientist to look at animals that will last forever.

Orlean made was the quotes that she put into the Article. Some go very well with the subject at hand and show good support to what she is trying; but other quotes could be controversial and made me question why she put this into her article all together. A good example of this kind of quotes is “I love deer one of the champions of the whitetail division said to me there my babies”. This quote could be look at as taxidermist are very loving and caring for the animals and this is just another way to preserve them and show respect for the animal itself dead or alive. But it could be look at on a whole different perspective that they are just plain weird and unusual people that are in taxidermy because it satisfies there weirdness.

Assignment 6 choices Cameron Bazan

Assignment 6: Choices

The First choice that Orlean made was how she made the Article itself, she centered it around what she seen when she walked through the taxidermy expo.  She went and interviewed many taxidermists to show that she has good ethos and is not just giving her opinion on taxidermy. Also she gave her perspective on the details of taxidermy and what is behind it. I think she did this to show people what goes into making a taxidermy animal.

Another choice that Orlean made was the quotes that she put into the Article.

Another choice that Orlean made was when she decided to create very descriptive paragraphs that show taxidermy. This could take away from her purpose of showing that taxidermy is not as bad as people make it look. She gives example like “ I knew a fellow with cattle, and I told him, if you ever have a stillborn, id really like to have it I thought it would make a really nice mount” Some readers could take this as an offense to animals. I believe that Orlean going into detail did not assist her in backing up her purpose for writing this article

Orleans choice in putting the history of taxidermy into her article gave her good support. It made readers acknowledge that is has been happening for years it’s something knew that some weird people just put together. Also is could be seen as a tradition and passed from generation to generation and most people could respect keeping traditions going to respect their past. It also showed that taxidermy is a growing subject and its only growing because that respect that the taxidermist show for their fellow peers and the Animals they are mounting.

Assignment 6 Cameron Bazan

Assignment 6

Orleans main tone in her article “life like” could be surprised. You can find this by reading it seeing all the spots where she was astounded or taken back by a certain thing she found out about taxidermy. For example “That there is a taxidermy championship at all is something of astonishment, not only to the people in the world who have no use for a Dan-D-Noser and Soft Touch Duck Degreaser but also to taxidermist themselves. Orlean sometimes loses her ethos when she puts in controversial quotes that could be judge in two completely different perspectives. For example when she talks about the lady that says she loves dear this could be looked as that taxidermist are weird and unusual people or that they have a lot of respect for the Animals.

I believe that in Orlean world she did not know what taxidermy is and she presumed that a lot of her readers had no idea what taxidermy was or if they knew what it was they know very little about it. She defiantly wanted to reach out to her readers and show them what taxidermy is and how it’s not as bad as it they may think it is.

Orlean wrote this in an article form because she is a journalist so maybe this is her most convincing medium for getting her purpose out on a subject. I believe this genre could help her get her purpose out because articles are very usually short and they get the message across quickly and efficiently. This would allow readers to make quick work of her article and allow them to understand it better.

In-Class reflection Cameron Bazan

In-Class Reflection: Draft 1

Throughout reading my peer’s essays I found some very interesting views towards Sedaris’s “Standing By”. What I found between the two essays that I have read was that Sedaris’s purpose for writing this essay goes beyond the airport it has to deal with the many people different views on each other and how judgmental and aggressive they can be.

What sets me apart from my peer’s is there experience in flying. I personally have not flown very much in the past few years as my peers say they are frequent flyers and can relate to Sedaris experiences in airports. I was also intrigued by how the writers really focused in on Sedaris’s examples he gave. In the first paper she focused on one quote per paragraph and gave support to back it up the main purpose.

When is created my essay I started off by making or taking the summary that I made of Standing by. I then created a purpose statement that allowed me to map out the rest of my paper in an organized fashion.  I based my purpose statement off of what I thought was important in his essay. For example, his purpose in writing, and why where some of the example in the essay; how do they fit in.

Assignment 4 choices Cameron Bazan

Sedaris made the choice of creating his story in an airport because it is a very heavily populated place. It also draws in many different cultures and people from all around the world. Drawing in people from all around the worlds means there are a lot of different opinions on each other’s culture, maybe what how they dress or what they say or even how they speak.  Sedaris used the airport to his advantage because it could be claimed as one of the most judgmental areas around the globe.

His choice of creating the setting in an airport was for him to give many example of how judgmental people are no matter where they are from. His purpose was to tell his readers to not judge a book by its cover. Using an airport you could say there are many different people each having their own “cover” and look past that and mind your own business if you don’t know how they are then they are not your problem.

Sedaris would have chosen to write this because he sees a lot of judgments that are negative towards other people. He made this very clear to his reader by picking some of the worst example/experiences he himself had had in an airport. He chose to choose the worst because if people can just look past other people flaws then people could get along and remove the negative judgments in society. Also if he would have picked his good experiences in airports then that would have weakened his support of his opinion.

Using negative example/experiences in his story had a huge effect on his reader. He wanted to show them the worst so they could see how bad it is and maybe how they did not want to experience It themselves. You could say he wanted to show them the silver lining on the dark cloud. Although he never really said that he is against judgment he shows support that pushes it towards that fact that it is the problem with society. That people care to much about what other people think and not their own lives.

This choice relates to the date and place where Sedaris choose to have the story take place. He made it take place after the tragedy of the twin towers terrorist attack. He wanted the reader to make the connection that the attack could be connected to airports and that people are uneasy in airports after such a tragedy struck America. He wanted to show that people are uneasy and can make them act weird so. So their always a back ground story of why someone is acting or dressing the way that they are.

assignment 4 cameron bazan

Sedaris’s “Sanding By” was an essay written to show the real scenario of everyday life and what goes on beyond our own thoughts. Sedaris used Word choice example from his own life to gather audience and support his opinion about how airports make people go crazy. First of all Sedaris wanted to attract a certain kind of audience when he wrote this, which could be people that are frequent flyers or people who spend a lot of time standing around mass crowds. That being said he definitely had a motivation for writing this which could be his experience being around airports made him a very judgmental person about other people that are around him. Another motivation could have been his problems with airports and how they change good people into monsters.

Sedaris is writing this after 9/11 which was a huge devastation for Americans and left many of them on edge. Sedaris creates his story to take place in an airport which is now very uncomfortable for Americans and any passenger at that. Maybe this could be an explanation why airports turn people into monsters. Sedaris wanted readers to remember not all people are what they seem from the outside there may be some situation that makes them uncomfortable with their surroundings and would not allow them to be there self’s. So maybe his message could be to not judge a book by its cover.

It’s funny how Sedaris used a magazine as his medium because magazines can be found in waiting areas as in the airport for people to take their mind of the Couse that is going on around them. He could have used this as a message to his readers to tell them not to judge others and keep your mind out of others business.

Assignment 3 Cameron Bazan

Sedaris would have written this story to show the frequent delays while traveling through airports and the weird conversation and arguments that go along with it. Also not everyone has experienced flight and Sedaris could use this to show some of his experiences while using airports as a mode of transportation. For example “2003 when the flight attendant asked us to pray for our troops in Iraq” (Sedaris 275). He talks about how this was weird and a first time he has ever heard this on an airplane. Most people have very stereo typical thoughts on flying that you go to a building walk through a tunnel and you hop in an airplane, Sedaris shows that there is more to flying then what meets the eye.

Sedaris didn’t just write this for his pleasure he wanted his audience to receive a message about airports. Sedaris hoped that readers would feel that airports are strange places: Places you don’t want to spend a long time in but sometimes you have no choice. While explaining airports he uses very descriptive and offensive languages. The main message he is trying to tell his audience is to not make weird conversations in airport because the make people around you judge and think negatively about you as he is doing in Standing By.

Throughout David Sedaris’s Standing By, he question himself and ethics. The starts of by questioning flight attendant’s how do they handle problems and what are some tips and tricks they use while flying; he also questions why some people strike conversations in an airport waiting lounge. Not only does he question the conversation he questions the ethics of each one. The main thing Sedaris is puzzled about is why he is flying overall. After the bad and weird experience he has had you think he wouldn’t fly, he says it makes him go brain dead.

Sedaris, David.”Standing By.”First year Composition Reader.Boston:Pearson,2011.275-277.Print.

Sedaris "Standing By" Cameron Bazan

David Sedaris’s Standing By took place in airport. Sedaris talked about how the airport is a trap that turns average human being into monsters. He says that every time he fly’s there is delay which creates conversation that normally two people wouldn’t talk about in public.  Through every weird conversation that he hears he has some kind of input on what he thinks about the situation.
